Adaminaby is a pretty town sitting close by Lake Eucumbene, the largest man-made lake of the Snowy Mountains Scheme.

The present township of Adaminaby resulted from the damming of the Eucumbene River for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme.

The original township was relocated before the surrounding valleys were flooded and over 100 buildings were dismantled and re-erected at the new site. One of the original churches is located by the lake at Old Adaminaby, 9km south west of town.

Surrounding the town are a wealth of natural attractions and outdoor activities. Nearby ski resort Selwyn Snowfields offers plenty of winter activities, and the summer sojourner can expect to be kept busy with the abundant opportunities for bushwalking, exploring the Kosciuszko National Park, horse riding and watersports.

Lake Eucumbene, the Murrumbidgee and Eucumbene Rivers provide possibly the most ideal fishing conditions in the Snowy Region. In spring and summer, fishing takes over as one of Adaminaby’s most popular activities, with trout the most sought after fish.

Spotlights on...

HORSE RIDING is big in this part of the world, not really surprising when the majority of the region is considered to be the home of 'The Man from Snowy River'.

Horse riding is available almost throughout the entire Snowy Mountains region. Saddle up and explore undoubtedly some of Australia's most picturesque, inspiring and challenging countryside. Experience an amazingly diverse array of landscapes by riding in areas such as around Adaminaby and Yaouk, along the Thredbo Valley, in the lush Khancoban and Tumbarumba districts, in the northwest of the region in Tumut, in fact just about anywhere in the entire region!

Guided treks through the mountains can range from an afternoon to three to five days, depending on the operators and the riders levels of experience, and are a must for horse-fans. At the end of the day, another campfire and wonderful bush meal awaits, with fireside stories of the days adventure.

Locating a horse riding outfit for whatever the skill level of the participant is easy. Visit or contact a Visitor Centre listed in this guide for information regarding operators and treks.

If you have never ridden a horse before, and never in the Snowy Mountains, make sure you correct that lack in your life - it's an experience you won't forget!
